Driving Change: Hygiene Systems Adds 4 New EVs to Its Fleet
At Hygiene Systems, sustainability isn’t a side project, it’s built into every part of how we deliver smarter washroom services and commercial hygiene solutions across New Zealand.
From reducing paper waste through controlled dispensing to compostable liners and FSC-certified products, we're always looking for smarter, cleaner ways to deliver great service and to support our customers.
That’s why we’re proud to announce the latest step on our sustainability journey: the addition of four new electric vehicles (EVs) to our national fleet, one in Christchurch and three in Auckland, powering a cleaner approach to service delivery and hygiene consumables logistics.
This move supports our ongoing emissions reduction plan, certified through Toitū carbonreduce, and helps us futureproof our fleet as infrastructure and technology continue to improve.
🔋 Smarter Transport for a Cleaner Future
Adding more EVs to our fleet isn’t just a sustainability statement, it’s a high-impact, operational decision. Each EV directly reduces the carbon footprint of our technician visits, washroom servicing, and hygiene product deliveries, especially in dense urban environments like Auckland and Christchurch.
Benefits of EVs in the service industry include:
- Lower carbon emissions: EVs generate zero tailpipe emissions, helping us reduce our Scope 1 emissions, a key target under our Toitū carbonreduce certification.
- Reduced running costs: With fewer moving parts and lower fuel costs, EVs offer long-term savings that allow us to reinvest in service improvements.
- Quiet operation: EVs are quieter than combustion vehicles, reducing noise disruption when servicing busy urban sites and sensitive environments like hospitals or aged care facilities.
- Better route efficiency: Modern EVs combined with our route optimisation tools make it easier for our teams to plan around peak hours and top-up charging.
In Auckland, our three new EVs will be been integrated into regular service routes and install schedules, helping us reach commercial clients faster and with less impact, from daily deliveries of washroom consumables to scheduled servicing of sanitary units and brand new installs of hygiene equipment.
⚡ Charging Ahead, With Our Own Infrastructure
To support our EV rollout, we've installed dedicated EV charging stations at our Auckland base and the Christchurch warehouse will follow in the coming days. These stations are used by our technician fleet for quick top-ups between runs and full overnight charges, ensuring each EV is ready to go the next day.
Importantly, we’ve also made our charging stations freely available to Hygiene Systems staff who own their own electric vehicles. It’s just one way we’re supporting our team to make more sustainable choices on and off the job.
🔍 Why EVs Are a Smart Sustainability Investment
The business case for EVs in service-based industries continues to strengthen. According to the Climate Change Commission, light electric vehicles in New Zealand already produce 60–80% fewer emissions over their lifetime compared to internal combustion engine vehicles.
A recent EECA report also highlighted that the number of public and workplace charging stations in NZ is rising steadily, removing one of the key barriers to EV adoption. This is especially useful for businesses like ours that provide nationwide hygiene servicing, event venue support, and multi-site consumable replenishment.
🌿 One More Step Towards Our Net Zero Goals
This fleet update directly supports our Toitū carbonreduce programme, which tracks vehicle emissions as a key performance area. While we still rely on a mixed fleet to reach remote or high-volume clients, expanding our EV capability puts us firmly on the path to lower emissions and smarter, future-ready servicing.
From in-cubicle servicing to touch-free dispenser installs, every delivery and every technician visit matters, and now, more of them will be powered cleanly.
We’re proud to be making these changes not just for ourselves, but for the communities and businesses we serve.
