Certified Carbon Conscious: Hygiene Systems Achieves Toitū Carbonreduce Certification

At Hygiene Systems, we’re passionate about keeping Aotearoa clean and green. We’ve always strived to reduce our environmental footprint while delivering exceptional service, and now we’re proud to share a major milestone on our sustainability journey: we’ve achieved Toitū carbonreduce certification.

This independent certification verifies our greenhouse gas emissions to the international ISO 14064-1:2018 standard and confirms our commitment to managing and reducing our carbon footprint over time.

Why Toitū?

We chose Toitū because it's New Zealand-based, trusted, and aligned with science-based targets. Their robust, independent audit process ensures our data is accurate, and our targets are meaningful. As part of the Toitū collective, we’re joining a nationwide movement toward a low-carbon future, built on credible action and transparent reporting.

Real Progress, Backed by Data

Since 2019, we’ve made significant changes to reduce our emissions and improve operational efficiency. Some highlights:

⚡ Energy use down 17% through smarter electricity practices and a shift to renewable energy (From 55,285 kWh to 45,861 kWh)

🚗 Fleet fuel emissions cut by 19% through optimised vehicle routes and more efficient vehicles (From 256.37 tCO₂e to 207.46 tCO₂e)

♻️ Introduction of compostable liners has prevented ~190,000 plastic bags from reaching landfill annually

🔋 More efficient dispenser systems are helping reduce battery waste and servicing frequency

Verified Emissions (2024):

Through the Toitū programme, our total verified emissions for the 2024 reporting year were:

Breakdown:

• Scope 1 (Direct – Fuel use): 211.09 tCO₂e
• Scope 2 (Electricity use): 3.72 tCO₂e
• Scope 3 (Transport, waste, materials, services): 238.56 tCO₂e

This forms the baseline for our future reductions, and we’re already taking steps to lower it further.

Looking ahead, we’re building on our momentum. Our next goals include:

🔋 Further improving Autotowel battery life, introducing recyclable batteries and reducing service frequency

🧭 Smarter route planning for field teams
